In 1927, a group of dedicated young Delta women organized a graduate group and petitioned Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Grand Chapter to establish an alumnae chapter in the greater Los Angeles area. (Left to Right: Ellen Garrett, Portia Griffin, Juanita Miller, Miriam Matthews, Hebe Robinson and Consuels Hinton) The Grand Chapter accepted the request and the Nu Sigma Chapter became the first alumnae chapter in the Farwest Region. With Soror Miriam Mathews as the first president, Nu Sigma was chartered in July, 1929 with ten charter members, including our beloved Founder, Soror Wertie Blackwell Weaver:
D Founder Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter Under the new nomenclature ruling accepted by the Grand Chapter, all alumnae chapters were renamed for the city/area in which they were chartered. During the late 1950's the Nu Sigma Chapter was renamed the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter. For eighty years, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter Deltas has worked with vigor, tenacity, courage, and conviction in service to the greater Los Angeles community. Throughout this long and illustrious history, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter has had notable and historic accomplishments. The Chapter implements the National Five-Point Programmatic Thrust under the public service mandates of the organization in the greater Los Angeles area. In addition to volunteer projects, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter is the employer of nearly 200 community workers through its Head Start State Pre-schools and senior citizen programs. Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter Leadership The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter is proud to be the home of so many leaders, from the current leadership with the 2008 - 2010 Chapter Officers, to a National President and several Regional Directors that served the Farwest Region. The Los Angeles Minerva Foundation The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter established the Los Angeles Minerva Foundation to manage financial contributions for our projects and our scholarships. Contributions to support Chapter projects and scholarships may be made directly to this non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation.
