The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter has celebrated many accomplishments since our chartering including the following historic events:

TIME FRAME ACCOMPLISHMENT

1963

Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter's Dr. Geraldine P. Woods became Delta’s 13th National President. Under her administration, the first Delta Teen Lift was organized.

Los Angeles Chapter began its successfully operated volunteer tutorial reading project Delta Reading Improvement Classes "DRIC".

1965

Approximately 350 Sorors participated in Sorority's National Convention that was hosted by the members of the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter in August of 1965. The National Convention took place at the Ambassador Hotel during the time of the Los Angeles Summer Riots which saw the National Guard establish checkpoints at the Ambassador Hotel, with police posted on the hotel's roof.

National President, and Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter member, Dr. Geraldine P. Woods, was invited to the White House by Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson to participate in the launching of Project Head Start. Later that year, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter established its first Head Start State Pre-school Program.

1966

A permanent Head Start committee, advisory board, and an administrative office was established. The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter staffs and manages 13 Head Start State Pre-School locations.

A new era was ushered in as Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter moved to undertake an effort designed to mobilize its own programs and coordinate existing resources in the community. Thus, the Life Development Project concept was born.

An adjunct to the Delta Life Development Center is the OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information Systems) program. OASIS is co-sponsored by Macy's (in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Shopping Plaza). OASIS has been designated as a model program by the City of Los Angeles

1986

With our partner, the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter broke ground for the two-story multi-use brick building known as the Delta Life Development Center on the corners of West Boulevard, Adams Boulevard and Buckingham Road. The Delta Life Development Center is grant-funded program, which would provide varied life support services for senior citizens.

The Social Action Committee of Los Angeles Alumnae enthusiastically supported the inaugural Delta Day at the State Capitol, and has continued to play a major role in the event over the years.

1992

The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter celebrated its first Delta Spirit Awards Celebration fundraising event to fund Chapter programs. Sculptor, Tina Allen, was commissioned to create a unique bronze sculpture - "Delta Spirit", which is presented to each award honoree. The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter has had the honor of having Lawry's Foods as a partner in our goal to provide scholarships for higher education, and annually, Lawry's Foods contributes to the scholarship fund and makes a personal presentation at our May Month celebration.

1997

Following the National Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter established a Dr. Betty L. Shabazz Delta Academy for at-risk girls ages eleven to fourteen. The Chapter's Delta Academy won National and Regional awards for its innovative program, and was featured in the Los Angeles Times.

2005

The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter's Delta Academy program received grant funds from the California Endowment and the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF) to develop and publish a cookbook containing healthy recipes to support a Healthy Lifestyle Change for children.

Dr. Betty L. Shabazz Delta Academy added two new components - Delta GEMS and Rites of Passage.  The Delta GEMS program targets at-risk girls ages fourteen to eighteen, and the Rites of Passage component celebrates these young women as they "Come of Age".

The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter establishes The Los Angeles Minerva Foundation as a non-profit 501c(3) foundation to manage the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter investments including the Delta Spirit Awards contributions and the distribution of raised funds, contributions, and endowments to the Chapter's programs and scholarship award recipients.
