Los Angeles Alumnae
Chapter's Dr. Geraldine P. Woods became Delta’s 13th National President.
Under her administration, the first Delta Teen Lift was organized. |

Los Angeles Chapter began its successfully
operated volunteer tutorial reading project
Delta Reading Improvement Classes
"DRIC". |

1965 |
Approximately 350 Sorors participated in
Sorority's National Convention that was hosted by the members of the Los
Angeles Alumnae Chapter in August of 1965. The National
Convention took place at the Ambassador Hotel during the time
of the Los Angeles Summer Riots which saw the National Guard establish
checkpoints at the Ambassador Hotel, with police posted on the hotel's roof. |

National President, and Los Angeles Alumnae
Chapter member, Dr. Geraldine P. Woods,
was invited to the White House by Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson to participate in
the launching of Project Head Start. Later that year, the Los Angeles
Alumnae Chapter established its first Head Start State Pre-school Program. |

1966 |
A permanent Head Start
committee, advisory board, and an administrative office was established. The
Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter staffs and manages 13
Head Start State Pre-School
locations. |
|
A new era was ushered in as Los Angeles Alumnae
Chapter moved to undertake an effort designed to mobilize its
own programs and coordinate existing resources in the community. Thus, the
Life Development Project concept was born.

An adjunct to the
Delta Life Development Center is the
OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information Systems) program.
OASIS is co-sponsored by Macy's (in the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Shopping
Plaza). OASIS has been designated as a model program by the City of Los
Angeles |

1986
|
With our partner, the City of Los Angeles, the Los
Angeles Alumnae Chapter broke ground for the two-story multi-use brick building
known as the Delta Life
Development Center on the corners of West Boulevard, Adams Boulevard and
Buckingham Road. The Delta Life Development Center is grant-funded program,
which would provide varied life support services for senior citizens. |

The Social Action
Committee of Los Angeles Alumnae enthusiastically supported the
inaugural
Delta Day at the
State Capitol, and has continued to play a major role in the event over the
years. |

1992 |
The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter celebrated its
first Delta Spirit Awards
Celebration
fundraising event to fund Chapter programs. Sculptor, Tina Allen, was
commissioned to create a unique bronze sculpture - "Delta Spirit", which is
presented to each award honoree. The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter has had the
honor of having
Lawry's Foods
as
a partner in our goal to provide scholarships for higher education, and
annually, Lawry's Foods contributes to the scholarship fund and makes
a personal presentation at our May Month
celebration. |

1997 |
Following the National
Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter
established a Dr. Betty L. Shabazz Delta Academy
for at-risk girls ages eleven to fourteen. The Chapter's Delta Academy won
National and Regional awards for its innovative program, and was featured in
the Los Angeles Times. |

2005 |
The Los Angeles Alumnae
Chapter's Delta Academy program received grant funds from the California Endowment
and the
Delta Research and Educational
Foundation (DREF) to develop and publish a
cookbook containing healthy recipes to support a Healthy Lifestyle Change
for children. |

Dr. Betty L. Shabazz
Delta Academy added two new
components
- Delta GEMS and
Rites of Passage. The Delta GEMS program targets at-risk girls ages fourteen to eighteen,
and the Rites of Passage component celebrates these young women as they
"Come of Age".

The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter establishes The
Los Angeles Minerva Foundation
as a non-profit
501c(3) foundation to manage the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter investments
including the Delta Spirit Awards contributions and the distribution of
raised funds, contributions, and endowments to the Chapter's programs and
scholarship award recipients. |

2006 |
Under the Delta Reading Improvement Classes (DRIC) Committee,
the Los Angeles Alumnae
Chapter won a grant to conduct a Science in Everyday Experiences "SEE"
program with elementary aged students. Our co-partners A-MAN, Inc.
International Science and Discovery Center, Los Angeles World Airports - LAWA, and Parent Elementary School
helped make learning science fun. |

The
Mental and Physical Health Committee
received
National recognition at the National Convention in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania – August 1, 2006 by winning the “Lose To Win”: Total Woman
Healthy Weight Competition for the Farwest Region. |

2007 |
The
Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter received Regional recognition by winning the
Farwest Region’s “Newsletter Award” for its outstanding communication
The
Delta News.
The award was
presented
by Regional Director, Tressa Williams, at the Farwest Regional Conference in
Santa Clara, California on August 17, 2007. |

2008 |
On May 24, 2008, the
Los Angeles Delta Choraliers
celebrated 50 years of musical service. |
