The MissionThe Dr. Betty L. Shabazz Delta Academy and the Dr. Jeanne Noble Delta GEMS Institute provides its participants with a special place to learn about sisterhood, scholarship, service, math, science, technology, non traditional careers, and leadership. The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter’s Dr. Betty L. Shabazz Delta Academy is an exciting and innovative way for the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to use their skills and resources to nurture and develop the leaders of tomorrow. The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter conducts the Delta Academy at its Delta Sigma Theta Center Life Development Center. The Delta Academy program contains three key components:
DELTA ACADEMY The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy program provides a unique forum for at-risk girls to share their experiences, explore their hopes and dreams for the future, and receive individual and collective attention, support and encouragement in preparation for the challenges of tomorrow. The Delta Academy component is designed for at-risk girls ages 11 to 14 years old. The program includes mentoring, monthly workshops, parent workshops, field trips, computer training and other enrichment activities for the Delta Academy participants. The Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter's Delta Academy program won a grant from the California Endowment and the Delta Research and Educational Foundation (DREF)* for the Delta Academy participants to develop and publish a cookbook containing healthy recipes which support a Healthy Lifestyle Change for children.
The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) Institute is an extension of the Delta Academy program and is designed for at-risk girls ages 15 to 18 years old. Delta GEMS provides the frame work to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a “CAN DO” attitude. The program includes mentoring, monthly workshops, parent workshops, field trips, computer training, tutoring, college/career counseling, and other enrichment activities for the Delta GEMS participants. RITES OF PASSAGE The Rites of Passage component is designed for the participants of the Delta Gems program. The program includes self-esteem and awareness activities, cultural and economic development, and culminates the Delta Academy/Delta GEMS experience with a celebration of our young women "Coming of Age". * The Delta Research and Educational Foundation was founded in 1967 under the leadership of Dr. Geraldine Pittman Woods, a noted scientist, who then served as 13th National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Dr. Woods was member of the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter.
