The MissionDelta Reading Improvement Classes - (DRIC) is a celebrated community service project of the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter. DRIC began as a volunteer tutorial reading project in 1963 as a response to the needs of many children in the immediate community who require supplemental reading assistance. Delta volunteers include teachers and reading specialists who lend their professional skills to assist these students weekly. Currently, DRIC programs are conducted at various elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School district.
Delta Research and Education Foundation (DREF) - the non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in partnership with the AAAS Directorate for Education and Human Resources Programs, developed and implemented a 5-year program initiative as an informal science education project funded by the National Science Foundation. The SEE Initiative helps parents and caregivers of African American elementary and middle school age children (kindergarten -8th grade) develop effective ways to support children's informal science and mathematics learning experiences. To fulfill the SEE Initiative, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter partnered with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and A-MAN, Inc. International Science and Discovery Center in Inglewood, CA, to help make learning science fun. The curriculum provided workshops, "hands-on" experiments and activities as well as field trips for local youth at Parent Elementary School in the Ladera Heights area of Los Angeles, CA.
