The MissionThe Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter Head Start Volunteer Committee raises funds to replace and repair equipment, furniture, books and toys. The committee has also launched “Adopt-a-Center” and "Read To Me" projects. The Adopt-a-Center project encourages chapter members, community partner, and community volunteers to provide services and goods to a specific center within the greater Los Angeles area. The "Read To Me" project encourages parents, chapter members, community volunteers, and partners to donate books, resources and time to read aloud to the children at the various Head Start locations. It also provides books for a take-home library for each Head Start site. Volunteerism There are a number of ways to become involved. Contact the Delta Sigma Theta Head Start Administrative Office. In 1965, National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Dr. Geraldine P. Woods was invited to the White House by Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson to participate in the launching of Project Head Start. Later that year, her Los Angeles Alumnae home chapter established its first Head Start program. Los Angeles Alumnae continues its legacy as a delegate agency for the Head Start State Pre-School program since 1965. Presently, the chapter operates 13 Head Start Centers, with an enrollment of over 800 multi-ethnic students. In honor of her hard work and dedication, and in loving memory of our beloved Soror, Chapter member, and past Chapter and National President, the Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter named and dedicated the Dr. Geraldine P.
